Membership Application General Information

To be a member of the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association, an applicant must:
  • be a graduate in veterinary medicine of a recognized veterinary college or university;
  • be at least 18 years of age;
  • not have been struck from the register of, and not under suspension from, any veterinary association or equivalent body;
  • be of good moral character and reputation, and;
  • hold the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association's (CVMA) National Examining Board Certificate of Qualification or currently hold a license to practice veterinary medicine in another Canadian province.

If the requirements of Section 1 above are not met, then the Council of the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association has the power to grant a Temporary, Conditional or Restricted Membership for a specific period. The Council may renew such membership as it sees fit. Persons to whom this form of licensure may be granted are:

  • applicants for membership who are graduates from an accredited veterinary school pending the writing of, or confirmation of results from the National Examining Board examinations;
  • applicants pending the attendance at a licensing seminar, or successful completion by that person of an examination on the Act and Bylaws of the Association;
  • such other persons as the Council may, in its discretion, see fit.

All para-veterinary work requires direct supervision by a fully licensed General Practice Member. In Saskatchewan these position are held by qualified graduates of a recognized two year Veterinary Technologists course.

Licensure Seminar

All applicants must agree to attend a licensure seminar within twelve (12) months of being granted a license or else write and pass a written examination on the provisions of the Act and Bylaws of the Association within this twelve (12) month period and still attend the next licensure seminar. One seminar a year is held in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting, which takes place in September. Successful applicants in any membership category are classified as temporary members until they have attended the Association's licensure seminar.

Certificate of Qualification

The Certificate of Qualification is awarded once the candidate has passed the required prats of the NEB exam. Graduates of veterinary school accredited to the American Veterinary Medical Association's Council on Education standards must write and pass parts A & B of the National Examination Board.

Graduates of other veterinary schools need to pass Parts A & B as well as the practical portion of the NEB referred to as Part C. Once a candidate who requires Part C has passed Parts A & B, they are eligible for a restricted practice license that allows them to practice under supervision of a fully licensed General Practice Member.

Applicants without the Certificate of Qualification who hold academic or post-graduate appointments at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, located in Saskatoon are eligible for membership in the SVMA.
